Not Just Any Birthday!

(four generations of the women in my family...plus a few boys for good measure)

Today was my grandmother's 98th birthday and I have to say I feel purty darn proud just saying that. It's not like I've had anything to do with her longevity or that it will play any part in determing my own life span but it sure is cool knowing that I'm related to someone who was born when the cost of mailing a letter was 2 cents, Ernest Shackleton found the magnetic South Pole, and cars were a luxury while the normal mode of transportation required two legs or four.

She's lived through two world wars, the great depression, and more than 50 years of marriage before her husband passed away. She's experienced more love and loss than I could even fathom and still walked with a kick in her step while making sure you knew she could still kick you in the pants if it was needed. And at 35, when I'm just starting to learn a few lessons of my own, I can't even begin to imagine how much wisdom she must have stored in that little grey head she has stacked on top of her five foot frame.

So here's to you Grandma. We can't wait for the next birthday!

Awww, that is so sweet. I love to sit at the feet of the elderly to just *listen* to all that they have to say. It's so true that most of them have experienced enough that would make all of our head's spin. I miss my sweet Grama so much. Glad you still have yours.

What a great picture. What cute "little people" HA. My grandmother was 5'8. My aunts 6', oh and me and my mom are coming in at a short 5'6. Share some of that great wisdom! i could use some this week. ~Karlie

That is awesome! I hope she had a wonderful day! The 29th of this month will be two years since my Grandma passed, she was about 5'2" but she was larger than life to me. Shoot, now I have to go find the tissues.

Love your blog, can't wait to read more.
