Family Is A Funny Thing

I come from parents who have been married close to 50 years but Chris does not. He came to me with the package that only a child of divorce, abuse, and a kid with a step parent can carry. If it’s taught me nothing else, it’s taught me this:

I must do everything in my power to make sure my marriage is healthy and strong and permanent.

And even though my husband could add up every visit he has had with his biological father and still only tally up about 6 months of his 37 years, he is amazingly like him. They look alike; have the same mannerisms, similar flaws, and similar giftings. They are completely different people but definitely linked by the mystery of DNA.

Tomorrow, through some mighty miracle, his Dad and step-mom will be coming for a visit and dinner and I’ll get to witness for only the 3rd time in our marriage, the incredible and surreal image of two strangers who could be one person.

Kind of weird but definitely good!

That is weird! But cool! :)
I'll pray that it is an evening that blesses Chris!

I agree that it is strange how two people who don't spend a lot of time together can be so much alike in mannerisms. My 8 year old son can be much like my first husband even though they don't see each other very much, especially not in the first couple of years of K's life. His expressions can be uncannily like his bio father's! I hope that your visit goes well.

Boy, do I ever understand that! Watching my husband and his long-estranged father together (once every 5 years or so at funerals) is an extraordinarily surreal experience. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Except strange.

Gayle, we'll definitely be praying for you guys.

We're already praying for you guys though.

I hope Chris is doing alright, knowing some of his history and who he is. We are so proud of him, seeing the way he has come so far and matured so much....not that he was ever immature, but I think you know what I mean. We're proud to know you guys and are proud to have you as 'family'.

I wanted to say that so you know you have some tangible support from The Gilchrist Clan!

Love
Leanne

That is incredible! My husband was adopted by his dad...his biological father being similar to what you describe here. Yet Hubby is SOOO much like him, it frightens me. We talk about nature vs. nuture a lot in our house. Pray you have an incredible evening!!

My hubby and I are the opposite - him coming from a long line of very strong marriages, and I grew up with divorced parents - on my mom's side it is all a string of divorces.
I have learned that when the going gets tough, I tend to want to get going, and it has been this stable, consistent man who has never threatened to "quit me" (a Texas-ism). I hold our marriage together in a lot of ways - but this is his - he doesn't give up. We are married for life in his mind and that has never changed - but it has changed me.
And God is definitely the glue.

I hope the visit it nice. I really do.
