But this is a 5 star for a clean, faith based, family movie that opened up lots of discussion for the kiddos and I. It’s an oldie starring Gary Cooper and won something like 11 Academy Awards. It’s basically the TRUE STORY about a young man from Tennessee who is hanging out with the wrong crowd but through a series of events turns his life over to God….just in time to be drafted for the war. He struggles with the “Not Killing” part of the Bible and does some real soul searching before fully committing himself to the cause. God just completely blesses him and he becomes a hero to all of America.
Great movie for boys but my daughter loved it to!
I read that when the real Sergeant York was asked if they could do a movie on his life he had three conditions.
- That the film contain no phony heroics
- That his wife not be played by a Hollywood Glamour Girl
- That Gary Cooper portray York on screen
My husband who isn’t into foreign movies (Gayle, I don’t want to have to READ my movies) or old black and whites actually ended our night by asking, “So what other old Gary Cooper movies could we watch?”
If that doesn’t sell ya, what will?

Wow! You've sold me. Sounds great. Keep the fabulous stolen ideas coming so I can steal them, too.
We watched this a long time ago per Emily's suggestion and Ian's contemplated naming a son Sergent York Sims, I like it but I get hung up on the fact that his name was really Alvin, Sergent was his rank....ah well we'll see.
Oh, thanks for the tip! I'm always looking for good movies for the kiddos! I rented them Dante's Peak and totally forgot about the granny getting all roasted up, think I better start previewing again. ~Karlie
