It's A Hard Knock Life

We had a bit of a discrepancy today with one of the kids. Seems they didn't really feel chores were near as important as I did and voiced their opinion in a way that made smoke come out of my ears.

So Dad got involved.

He set this child-who-shall-remain-nameless on a research mission.

"Look up the words tenant and family member, decide which one you are, write a few sentences about which one you want to be, and report back to me."

A little huffing, puffing and stomping occurred as this child went off to work on the assignment. After a large chunk of time, a much humbler child returned and produced this...

"I have learned that being a family member has its own reward. For example if we were tenants we would have to pay to live hear and we would not own a single thing, that would stink. and since we aren't tenant's we get to live hear for free and we have our own responsibility's and we have to do our fair share of the work to keep our house in good shape so that is why i think being a family member is better then being a tenant."

Smart guy, that man of mine.

Oh, that's good. I'm gonna remember that the next time chores don't want to be done.

Very smart! I am very impressed with the child also! I love the Annie reference. I sing this song to my children all the time when they are protesting something hard in their spoiled little lives.

Wow! That is very creative. Your hubby is obviously a fantastic father!

That was a GREAT idea! I am SO stealing that. I might add mom an slave to those definitions so they can compare the difference between those words regarding my job description as well.

When my 15 and 17 year old sons "informed" me last week that they would should not be given timelines for their chores, I quickly perused my memory banks for similar phrases coming out of my teenage mouth to my mother years ago. Much to my chagrin, I remember the "wisdom" that I frequently offered my mother (and never to my father!) that overflowed from my "years of knowledge and experience" and shake my humble head. Parenting is definitely an amazing jumble of highs, lows, love and humility!

Such a great idea. I think I will get off this computer right now and make my kids do the same. I have requested the same chores for two days and they have been dragging their feet. I think it's because they know a Big Clean Day is scheduled for Wed (the day before the grandparents arrive!!)
