If you’ve read this blog for any length of time you know that poop is a hot topic around here. And the fact that my 4 year old still doesn’t do it on the toilet is where I hang my head in shame. I mean, come on, I’ve potty trained 3 other kids before him. It’s not like I DON’T know how to do this. So the only conclusion I’ve come to is that I’m lazy…lazy and just too dang busy to camp out in the bathroom until he sees that his little butt will NOT fall down the hole.
For some strange reason, (Uh, maybe the fact that he’s nearing five and still wears his pull-up for #2) I decided enough was enough and on Monday I packed up his pull-ups while he wasn’t looking and informed him they were all gone.
It was showdown time at the poo-poo corral.
I was operating under the theory of “What goes in must come out.” I knew it was only a matter of time before he’d have to give in and perch on the potty.
But ooh, he can be a stubborn little cuss and for the last four days he’s complained of belly aches that have interrupted my precious nap time, and squeezed his little cheekies so tight that I was afraid he was going to implode. And I’ve spent at least 10 hours a day sitting on the bathroom floor, reading every book imaginable to him, trying to get him to relax enough for it to unknowingly slip right out.

And today, dear friends who probably could care less, the inevitable happened. The poop dance/butt squeeze could no longer hold the tide of poop back and in a mad dash for the potty; we made it just in time for the explosion.
And he didn’t fall in.
And I won!

Yes, one for the Moms! I found my first the hardest, which is funny, cause she is female. My mother in law at the time decided enough was enough (she was only just 3, so I wasn't too worried) and trained her in a couple of days. I think that it was more like my daughter finally decided to cooperate. After that, my older kids have trained my younger ones. I don't know how our littlest will do. He is 2 1/2 and showing an interest occasionally. Since he has broken his leg, I haven't been asking him as much as I was before- no really good reason why except I figure he has enough to deal with. I wanted to say that I think we are more relaxed with each child. I believe that cold turkey does work when they are older- throwing out the pull ups, putting the soother in the garbage, etc. Hopefully he will be a proud toilet pooper from now on. Did you do a big family dance in the bathroom for him? Little M pooed in the tub tonight. Nasty! Thought you might like to know that you are not alone in your struggles with fecal waste!
Thanks for the delightful post. I was about to go in to poop withdrawal. Seems like forever since you last wrote about poop.
We used to play the game of describing what kind of poopie was made today: snake poopie, ball poopies, pudding poopie. Gives them something to look forward to.
Yay!
I too have spent my fair share of time reading books in the bathroom. Not for potty training but for constipation. That was one of the main reasons we started to homemake our bread - most of those problems are gone now!
"Where the Wild Things Are". That is the book I used to read to my now 16 year old just like you are for your son. Boy did that bring back memories.
Smiles!
YEAH! Congratulations! :) Hope it keeps up. You should celebrate! Have a potty party!
Well done, Gayle. I can imagine how frustrating it must have been though.
Sweet victory! Hooray for "Mom wins!" Good job persevering!
score one for Gayle!!
I'm excited for you. I can relate since having my fourth (who is nearing one year) I am DREADING the potty training. I hated doing it with the other three and would gladly pay someone to do it with him.
I'm lazy. I'll admit it.
I'm so glad you got some success under your belt. Or his, as it were.
You go Girl!!!!!
Susan

Yay!! This brings back memories of when my oldest was 3 and we did the same thing. That little bugger held it for 7 days!!! I'm getting ready to potty train child number 3 who is nearing his 3rd birthday. I'm dreading it with everything in me! Congrats to your son!! So, tell me, how does it feel to be diaper and pull up free?? We ought to be there in another 3 years. UGH. :D
Woo hoo! Way to go, Gabe!
Congratulations!!!!!!!!
You are the princess of poop!
Woo Hoo! Way to go there little man!
I hope he takes his new found ability and runs with it. :)
It's important to have some victories in life! Glad you found one in the Poop Corral. Good times. Oh the memories you'll have - and the therapy he'll need. :)
