How To Make Enemies Of Your Neighbors

It seems my neighborhood has been over run by political signs. As soon as the democratic and republican nominations were solidified, all of my neighbors ran down to their local political headquarters and grabbed every sign they could find and proceeded to decorate their lawns with them. It looks like one big tacky red, white and blue Christmas display. I'm waiting for the flashing lights to go up next.

Now, Chris and I aren't overly invested in the political arena. We don't watch the news, listen to every debate or read all the magazines with political candidates on the front unless they have invaded my beloved People magazine because we all know that if it makes it into people magazine it's well worth reading.

But we do vote in every election, do a little research on each candidate and occasionally watch a speech on YouTube.

So as the signs began popping up and breeding in my neighborhood, Chris and I began to realize that our fantasy of being best friends with our neighbors was over.

Super Over.

Because every one on my street is supporting the opposite candidate that we are. (I'm SO not telling who I'm voting for because I've seen what happens on other blogs and I'm too chicken to do it so don't even ask.)

So we (Ok, I'm being generous with the "we" thing. It was really Chris' big idea) felt the need to make our (his) political leanings known to the public. And I guess if you really WANT to know who we are voting for you could drive by my house because my husband has proudly nailed our signs in our front yard amongst my opposing neighbors signs. And I can't help but feel like I've just drawn battle lines with everyone who lives near me.

Maybe I should pass out homemade cookies to make sure there are no hard feelings.

LOL. If you know your neighbors well, I think you'd better start baking!

LOL.... I know exactly what you mean. We seem to be in the minority on our street, but the overall neighborhood we in the majority. Go figure. :-) We decided not to put out signs as well, just to keep the piece.

What's REALLY bad is my sister and her household, and our household are supporting different candidates as well. We are going to be staying with them this week, and we already stressed NO POLITICS. As a matter of fact, I'm not even watching the debates until I get home. That is why God invented DVR. ;-) LOL...

Ha! I just wrote about this on my blog. Honestly, i could try to remain quite, but my loud Republican kiddos would blow the whistle on me. Heck, who am I kidding? My blog is called Conservachick, we've had McCain stickers on our vehicles since the moment he was nominated, I stand up and cheer for the Republican float at all of our small town parades, and my daughter is going to be Sarah Palin for Halloween. I still would bake cookies though... maybe ones in the shapes of little elephants! He He. ~Karie

LOL! That's too funny. I know what you mean. I'm a Democrat in a sea of Republicans where I live and people have been trying to convince me otherwise. The funny thing? I'm not fond of either candidate.

I think that a good choc chip cookie can over come the greatest political differences.

Sigh. It's one thing when it on your blog, it's a whole other thing when it's real life. Baking is a good idea! Chocolate knows no political affiliation. Beware of what kind of ice cream you offer though, I heard somewhere that somebody was making different flavored ice creams for each of the candidates. Stick with chocolate mousse, I can't see how that would be offensive.

You know...so few people even put out signs here in Portland. "Everyone" votes for the same person, so why bother? It's odd to me, b/c I just moved from Ohio a year ago, which happens to be pretty evenly split--signs were everywhere there.

I personally get a kick out of the "switch the lawn signs" prank.

Snerk.

:) I think those yard signs are a great opportunity to go find out WHY your neighbors are interested in voting for the opposite candidate. And then break in to conversation about what YOU think (gently). Cookies help. Smiles certainly. At least then - if they just don't know about the other candidate, they will have gotten a friendly education (and a snack).

On the other hand, we have some party neighbors across the street - 2 guys living together and having keg parties in the garage. I was SHOCKED when they put up their McCain sign the other day. We've been waving at them ever since!
