Yeah....I DO! Now Did Anyone Get Me The Cuisinart?

You know what one of the coolest things about getting married was? All those amazing gifts. At no other time in my life have I ever received that much loot at once. Not my graduation, not the birth of my babies, definitely not my birthdays.

And people were really generous. I didn't get junk I got high quality stuff that has lasted nearly a decade and a half. Sheets that have lasted through years of "luv", vases that held my first bouquets from Chris and all the subsequent wildflowers and twigs that each child has presented to me, and appliances that have survived my newlywed cooking skills (or lack thereof) as well as the heavy use required to feed six people for years.

But when we reached the 14 year mark of our marriage things started falling apart. Vases began to break, sheets were worn thin, towels were looking pretty raggedy and appliances started busting. In the last week alone my blender and my food processor are, alas, no more.

I was looking up statistics the other day and I found that only 57% of marriages make it past the 8 year mark. So I'm feeling pretty good about beating the odds. I like being above average. It makes me feel good in all sorts of shallow ways. But my only thought was, "Why should I have to pay the price of worn out kitchen appliances for a nice long marriage?" I think we should get all new stuff if we pass the 8 year mark.

So I'm thinking of renewing my vows so I can get a new food processor.

See....my priorities are still in tact, right?

***this is SO tongue in cheek....I told you I was rusty.

Gayle, awhile back I had a good friend who had been married for 15 years. I thought that was such a wonderful accomplishment that it should be celebrated. So I threw her a surprise "anniversary shower" and asked guests to bring typical wedding gifts. It was a HUGE hit and she absolutely loved it. Sadly, we've lost touch over the years, but it was a fun thing to do. Now, I'm getting ready to celebrate my TWENTIETH anniversary (yikes!). Anyone want to throw an anniversary shower for me??? Yeah, I didn't think so... :)

I'm with you girls. Having been married 11.5 years, carrying #5- I have thread bare towels, kitchen towels that aren't even the same color. Blender dissappeared about 7 years ago and hasn't been replaced. But you know what I don't think I could live without? My stand alone mixer!!! Anyway, I'm all for those anniversary showers every 10-15 years!

Well, my first marriage ended after almost 6 years, and the Skip and I have been married 8 years this August. I did get new stuff the second time around, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend divorce in order to replace appliances:) I think your idea is better.

Okay...Ask Chris. I used to actually be kind of a picky eater. Gotta stick up for Cow tongue. Done right, it is tender, amazing and not weird at all. I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it.

Love your column, and what a treat! 2 blog entries!

Congrats!

My sister-in-law and I used to talk about having an anniversary shower all the time. My husband and I have been married 26 years today, so you know that our stuff is way beyond being any good any more. I've replaced or done without just about everything we got as gifts when we got married. Now, it's all about the wedding and baby showers for our daughters.

I had a tiny wedding and reception the first time around. I often think about re-newing my vows so I can buy a pretty dress and do all the normal bridey stuff.

I actually renewed my vows last October. We had the ceremony at a chapel and a reception at Landry's Seafood House.
People did ask us to register and we did. We received some terrific gifts from Crate & Barrel, Target and Williams-Sonoma.
Great timing since we needed some new drinking glasses.

I agree! :)
I might not be able to justify buying myself a Cuisinart, but I'd pitch in with a couple of girlfriends to buy one as a shower gift for someone else! :) We should start a new trend!

This is so funny, we were just talking about this yesterday at my cousin's bridal shower. My mom and Aunts were all joking that they should get to have another shower. They are all at or near their 30th's!

I've actually thought about this before. We've only been married almost five years, but I was thinking of people who have been married longer and how they should get to have another shower. Stuff does wear out, and they come up with such great things...like newer versions of the Cuisinart :)

I was thinking the same thing, just the other day. Steve and I have been married 15 years... we deserve it!
